Who is An Pan?

Hi, I am An, previously a Chinese teacher in Cairo, now a Chinese designer in Los Angeles. I am a multimeida designer, researcher, digital illustrator, culture lover and doll collector!
I specialize in decolonizing design. Most of my design works lands on tensions in between east and west, between past and future, between physical and digital. As a traveler and a culture lover, my design practices focus on exploring the complexity, diversity and intersectionality of cultures throughout time, space and medium. My M.F.A thesis 3rdSpace exploring different aspects of Chinese culture identity in the globalizing context and using design as a tool for future speculation.
My previous projects include City of Compression, a design research and project speculating how Chinese immigrants in LA Chinatown preserve and present their culture identity under extreme spatial compression; Plantenna, a collection of hybrid wearable acoustic devices seeking to provide alternative ways for travelers to engage with the city of Merida in Mexico.
I have my master degree in Media Design Practices from ArtCenter College of Design and hold a BA in Arabic language and literature from Beijing Language and Culture University in China. In the past, I worked as a Chinese teacher and cultural event planner at Confucius Institute in Cairo, Egypt.
